Checking a single username is something a browser does perfectly well. The reason to use a checker is a column of two hundred of them, where opening each by hand is an afternoon. Everything here is shaped by that: paste the column, run once, and read the rows that failed rather than the ones that worked.
A private account is still a live account
The most common misreading of these results is treating live as public. Instagram serves a profile page for private accounts, showing the handle, the avatar, and the counts, while withholding the posts. That page answers this request, so the row says live. If you need to know whether an account is private, the profile lookup returns that as an explicit field.

Screening comes first and costs nothing.
