About

A friend abroad says a video will not play, or you want to know whether a rights holder has geo-blocked your upload. This YouTube region restriction checker reads the list of countries a video is allowed in and compares it against 249 ISO country and territory codes, so whatever is missing shows up as blocked. Try https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ. It describes where the video is distributed, not whether a given place can reach YouTube at all.

How to use

Paste a link or a bare video ID, then press Run. A badge at the top gives the number of blocked countries, or says there is no region restriction. Below it you see how many places can watch and how many are blocked, then each blocked country as name and code, with a button that copies every code. When anything is blocked, you can expand the full allowed list. If YouTube returned no country data this time, the page asks you to retry.

Why Antarctica can show up as blocked

YouTube's player data lists the places a video is allowed in, not the places it is blocked. The tool subtracts that list from all 249 ISO 3166-1 codes, and the difference is the blocked set. That is why near-empty territories such as Antarctica or Bouvet Island can appear: they are missing from the allowed list, so the arithmetic counts them as blocked.

The server's location does not change the answer

The allowed-country list belongs to the video and stays the same whoever asks, so the request from the CheckKit server returns what a viewer in any country would get. You can answer whether a clip plays in Germany without finding a German connection to test from. When the server falls back to the YouTube Data API v3, it builds the same result from the API's allowed or blocked field.

Check right after upload, then again

A video that uses licensed music can pick up a regional block after it goes live, once a rights holder files a claim. Checking on upload day and again a day or two later catches it early. Results stay cached for ten minutes, so checking again sooner than that returns the earlier answer.

FAQ

How can I tell which countries a YouTube video is blocked in?

Paste the video link and press Run. Blocked countries are listed with their names and two-letter codes. An empty list means the video plays everywhere YouTube does.

It says no restriction, so why won't the video play for me?

The check covers the video's own distribution setting. A country where YouTube itself is unreachable, an age restriction, or a video set to private will not appear in that list.

Who sets a YouTube region restriction?

Either the uploader, through the video's distribution settings, or a rights holder through a copyright claim; music and film clips are the usual cases. The public page does not say which one applied the block.

What format are the copied country codes in?

ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 codes separated by a comma and a space, for example DE, FR, JP, ready for a spreadsheet or a script.
