How to use

Shared handle, separate profile
Meta ties Threads accounts to Instagram logins, which makes the handles look interchangeable. They are not. A person can hold an Instagram account and never open Threads, or delete the Threads profile and keep Instagram running. Checking both is two lookups, and disagreement between them is the normal case rather than a fault.
What one row tells you
A live row means the public profile answered this request. A die row means it did not, and the reasons collapse together: a typo, a handle that moved, a deleted profile, or a moment when the upstream declined to answer. The check is worth running twice before you write a handle off.

Can I check a Threads profile without logging in?

My Instagram handle works but Threads says die. Is that a bug?
No. Having an Instagram account does not create a Threads profile, and a Threads profile can be deleted while the Instagram one stays.
Does it show posts or follower numbers?
Neither. The answer is whether the profile page responds, and nothing about what is on it.
